Outer Banks Lighthouse Guide: What You Can Climb in 2026
Last verified August 12, 2026. Lighthouse access changes with restoration work, weather, and seasonal staffing. Use the official status links in this guide before building a day around a climb.
The Outer Banks lighthouse experience is not one single ticket or one set of rules. One tower sells same-day online tickets, another takes payment at the door, two are not climbable in 2026, and the small lighthouse on the Manteo waterfront is an exhibit rather than a tower climb. Here is the practical version, arranged from north to south.
2026 lighthouse status at a glance
| Lighthouse | Area | 2026 visitor access |
|---|---|---|
| Currituck Beach | Corolla | Seasonal climbing; pay at the lighthouse |
| Bodie Island | South of Nags Head | Seasonal climbing; same-day online ticket required |
| Cape Hatteras | Buxton | Grounds open; tower closed for climbing throughout 2026 |
| Ocracoke | Ocracoke Village | No tower climbs; base opens periodically for viewing |
| Roanoke Marshes | Manteo | Small waterfront replica with historical exhibits |
Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla
Currituck Beach Lighthouse is the most straightforward climb for many northern-beaches visitors. The official operator lists the 2026 season as March 21 through November 30, weather permitting. Regular climbing admission is $13 for ages four and older. Advance and online tickets are not offered; visitors pay at the lighthouse.
The unpainted red-brick tower has 220 steps. The grounds and museum shop are free, so a mixed group can still enjoy Historic Corolla Park while some members climb. Pair the stop with the Whalehead grounds or the soundfront, and keep a separate day for the Corolla 4×4 beach if you plan to drive north of the pavement.

Bodie Island Lighthouse
Bodie Island is the National Park Service tower to choose for a 2026 climb. The NPS says it will operate from late April through mid-October. Tickets are sold only through Recreation.gov, beginning at 7 a.m. for that day's climbs. The current price is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors age 62 and older, children 11 and younger, and visitors with disabilities.
The climb is a little more than 200 steps with no elevator or air conditioning. Climbers must be at least 42 inches tall, weigh less than 260 pounds, and be able to climb without being carried. Arrive at least five minutes before the ticket time. Heat, wind, lightning, or other unsafe conditions can cancel climbs.
Even without a ticket, the grounds are worth visiting. The boardwalk and nature-viewing trail provide soundside views and a good look at the tower. This is an easy stop on the way from Nags Head toward Pea Island and Hatteras Island.
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in 2026
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will not open for climbing in 2026. Restoration work continues, but the outdoor areas around the light station remain open 24 hours a day. Visitors can see the tower, walk the grounds, learn why it was moved, and use the National Park Service's virtual climbing experiences.
Do not skip Buxton just because the stairway is closed. The scale of the tower is clearest from the grounds, and the site fits naturally with a visit to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Our Cape Hatteras National Seashore guide covers nearby stops.
Ocracoke Lighthouse
Ocracoke Lighthouse is not open for climbing. The base opens periodically for viewing, so treat interior access as a bonus rather than a promise. Its small scale, white exterior, and village setting make it a very different stop from Bodie Island or Cape Hatteras.
Parking immediately around the site is limited and Ocracoke Village is pleasant to explore slowly. If this is a day trip, choose your transportation with the Ocracoke ferry guide before setting an itinerary.
Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse in Manteo
The cottage-style lighthouse at the end of the Manteo waterfront is a replica of the third Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse. It contains educational and maritime-history exhibits, including a historic Fresnel lens. This is not a stair-climbing experience; it is a short waterfront stop reached along a boardwalk that pairs well with downtown Manteo.
Accessibility and non-climbing visits
None of the historic towers has an elevator. The NPS describes the Bodie Island boardwalk and nature trail, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse pathway, and visitor facilities at the light stations as accessible, though sand and coastal conditions can change routes. Virtual tower experiences are available for Cape Hatteras, and Bodie Island has interpretive options for visitors who cannot climb.
If climbing is not a fit, plan around grounds, exhibits, photography, and nearby trails. A lighthouse visit can still be the anchor of the day without anyone taking the stairs.
