Hatteras Island Surf Fishing Challenge 2026: Angler Guide

The Hatteras Island Surf Fishing Challenge returns September 25-27, 2026, inviting individual anglers to compete along the shoreline from Rodanthe south through Hatteras Village.

This is a true surf-fishing tournament: boats, sound fishing, and pier fishing are not permitted. Competitors choose their own eligible beach locations, fish through the night, and use weigh stations positioned across the island. The format combines serious competition with the camaraderie of a late-September fishing weekend on one of the East Coast's best-known surf-fishing destinations.

Four Main Divisions and an Optional Red Drum Competition

The standard entry places an angler in four divisions: bluefish, black drum, sea mullet, and pompano. Primary payouts reach five places in each division and are calculated on an expected field of 200 paid entries.

Organizers advertise more than $12,000 in cash and prizes based on that participation level. Separate guaranteed prizes recognize the top junior, female, and senior anglers.

Competitors can also pay an additional $25 to enter the optional Slot Red Drum Tournament Within a Tournament. Citation-size red drum that are photographed and released during tournament hours may be recognized through the event's Big Red Hall of Fame program.

Tournament Weekend Schedule

Every participant must report to Camp Hatteras Conference Center in Rodanthe on Friday, September 25, between 4 and 11 p.m. This requirement applies even to anglers who registered and paid in advance. Each competitor must receive a tournament wristband and have it placed on their wrist before fishing begins.

Official fishing time starts at 11:59 p.m. Friday and continues around the clock until noon Sunday, September 27.

Leaderboard updates are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. Updates will be posted at weigh stations and through the organizer's social feed.

An awards dinner for registered participants runs from 12:30-2 p.m. Sunday at Camp Hatteras. The awards ceremony begins at 2 p.m., followed by the tournament raffle.

Registration and Entry Fees

The organizer lists an entry fee of $75 per angler when paid by September 14 and $85 after the early deadline. One standard entry covers all four primary divisions but does not include the optional Slot Red Drum competition.

Advance registration remains available through Thursday, September 24, with in-person registration offered during Friday check-in. Anglers seeking the reduced rate should use September 14 as the safe early-payment deadline.

Know the Access Rules Before Driving onto the Beach

Tournament registration does not provide special beach-driving privileges. Anyone using an off-road vehicle on Cape Hatteras National Seashore must have the appropriate National Park Service permit and may drive only on routes currently open to vehicles.

Beach access can change because of weather, resource protection, and seasonal conditions. Anglers should review current ramp status, carry the required recovery equipment, and allow time to scout legal fishing locations before the midnight start.

Competitors should also confirm that they hold any required North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License.

A Tournament That Supports the Island

Five weigh-in locations serve the communities of Rodanthe, Avon, Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras Village. Anglers should verify the final business locations before fishing because the organizer's current pages differ on the name of the Buxton station.

Fish retained and weighed during the tournament are sold under a special permit, with proceeds supporting Hatteras Island Meals. The volunteer organization provides meals to elderly and homebound island residents.
