Things to Do on the Outer Banks For Monday March 24th
Spring break is getting closer, the sun is hanging around a little longer, and the OBX is very much in that sweet spot where it already feels like spring even when the breeze still has a little attitude. The good news? The pattern is headed the right way. After today’s cooler snap, the forecast trends warmer through midweek and late week, with highs climbing back into the 60s and then around 70 before the next rain chance arrives.
Today’s OBX weather, sunrise, water, and beach note
For the central OBX around Nags Head, today is breezy and cooler, with a partly sunny sky, afternoon highs in the upper 40s to near 50, and north winds around 15 to 20 mph with stronger gusts.
Tonight drops into the mid-40s, but Wednesday rebounds to around 61, Thursday reaches the upper 60s, and Friday pushes close to 70. Sunrise is right around 7:00 a.m. and sunset is about 7:17 p.m.
At Jennette’s Pier, the ocean temperature is running about 52°F, which is still firmly “look pretty, don’t plunge in casually” territory. And as of this check, the National Weather Service page for the Northern Outer Banks shows no active hazardous weather conditions.
National Cheesesteak Day: yes, an OBX cheesesteak crawl is absolutely a thing
March 24 is National Cheesesteak Day, so today is a perfectly reasonable excuse to eat like you’re on vacation even if you’re just on lunch break. If you want to make a mini OBX cheesesteak crawl out of it, start at Stack ’em High in Kitty Hawk, where the Philly is built with sliced ribeye, mushrooms, onions, peppers, and a three-cheese blend on a hoagie roll. Then head to Jolly Roger in Kill Devil Hills for a chicken-or-steak version that comes with fries. Add Sharky’s OBX Grill in Kitty Hawk to the list for cheesesteaks on the lunch menu, and keep Bob’s Grill and Country Deli in Kill Devil Hills in your rotation too — Country Deli’s owners say the cheesesteak is one of their most popular sandwiches. That is not a bad way to spend a Tuesday.
National Cocktail Day: OBX Crush Season is Basically Here
It is also National Cocktail Day, which feels extremely on-brand for the Outer Banks. Around here, the Orange Crush is one of the easiest places to start: The Dunes in Nags Head serves one with fresh-squeezed orange juice, vodka, and triple sec, and Mulligan’s in Nags Head leans hard enough into its version that it literally runs an “Orange Crush Fridays” promotion.
If you want a fun variation, Lost Colony Tavern in Manteo has featured an Irish Crush with Jameson Orange Whiskey, triple sec, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and Starry. For a broader cocktail outing, Outer Banks This Week specifically calls out places like Grand Staff & Stein, 1587, Blue Water Grill, Eastside, Metropolis, Ocean Boulevard, and Bad Bean Baja Grill for standout cocktails, and Buffalo City Distillery says it’s aiming to be the gold standard for craft cocktails in northeastern North Carolina.
Warming weather means last-minute trip season
With the forecast improving after today and spring break inching closer, this is a smart window to lock in that last-minute OBX vacation or camping trip before everyone else has the same idea.
The weather is starting to look more like “sit outside with a drink” and less like “fight the wind in three hoodies,” and from here the overall trend is much more spring than winter. For the planning part, ClanCal is the move: one place for arrival day details, grocery runs, dinner plans, beach time, who’s bringing what, and the daily “what are we doing today?” question that somehow shows up every single trip.
Memorial Day weekend countdown
And because the OBX brain is always at least one season ahead: Memorial Day 2026 falls on Monday, May 25, which puts the Saturday kickoff of Memorial Day weekend just 60 days away. So yes, it is completely acceptable to start daydreaming about summer now. In fact, around here, it may be required.
If you want, I can also turn this into a more polished email-newsletter format with subject line, short teaser text, and section headers ready to paste.
