Things to Do on the Outer Banks For Monday March 20th

Spring is finally here, and honestly, it took its sweet time. The vernal equinox arrives at 10:46 a.m. today in Nags Head, which feels like the Outer Banks’ official permission slip to start thinking about porch dinners, sunset walks, and ice cream before noon. It may not be swimsuit weather just yet, but after a long winter, the fact that spring has officially clocked in is reason enough to celebrate.

Today’s Weather

Today looks like a classic early-spring OBX day: bright, crisp, and much nicer once the sun gets going. Nags Head started the morning in the upper 30s, and the forecast calls for a sunny day with a high near 59, with light winds becoming southeast this afternoon. Tonight stays mostly clear early, then clouds increase with a slight chance of showers late.

Sunrise, Water, and Beach Conditions

Sunrise was at 7:06 a.m. this morning, and sunset will be at 7:14 p.m., giving us a little more than 12 hours of daylight to enjoy on this first day of spring. Out on the water, the Nags Head buoy was reporting a water temperature of 44.4°F around 7:26 a.m., with wave heights around 3.9 feet and an easterly swell at 10 seconds. At Jennette’s Pier, today’s tide schedule shows a low at 12:41 a.m., a high at 6:54 a.m., a low at 1:10 p.m., and another high at 7:12 p.m.

National Chocolate Caramel Day, But Make It Ice Cream

Since it’s National Chocolate Caramel Day and the first day of spring, this feels like the perfect excuse to go get ice cream and call it seasonal self-care. The Outer Banks has no shortage of places to make that happen, with local favorites and sweet stops including Holy Cow Creamery, Big Buck’s Homemade Ice Cream, KEYZ New Zealand Style Ice Cream, Captain Scoops, Coastal Creamery, and plenty more up and down the beach. If there were ever a day to order the cone, the sundae, or something involving caramel drizzle, today is making a very strong case.

Memorial Day Weekend Countdown, Because Of Course We’re Already Doing That

It may be only the first day of spring, but this is the Outer Banks, so naturally someone is already asking about Memorial Day weekend. The Friday kickoff to Memorial Day weekend is 63 days away, and Memorial Day itself lands on Monday, May 25. That means we are officially in the season of pretending to be patient while already mentally pricing beach chairs, burger buns, and sunscreen.

Why the Outer Banks Is a Great Spring Break Camping Destination for Families

For families with kids, spring break camping on the Outer Banks can be a seriously smart move. Cape Hatteras National Seashore operates four developed campgrounds — Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, Frisco, and Ocracoke — and the broader Outer Banks tourism site highlights camping here as a cost-effective, family-friendly way to experience the islands. Add in cooler spring weather, room for kids to roam, easy access to beaches and nature, and the simple fun of sleeping near the ocean without peak-summer crowds, and it’s easy to see the appeal. The lighter crowds and milder conditions are an inference, but the campground availability and family-friendly setup are well supported.
