Things To Do On The Outer Banks For April 27, 2025
Welcome to your April 27, 2025 edition of “Things to Do on the Outer Banks”! Spring is in the air, and the OBX is buzzing with energy as Easter weekend marks the unofficial start of the season. Whether you’re here for family-friendly festivities, a dose of local history, or just to soak up the coastal charm, there’s something for everyone today. Let’s dive into what’s happening, along with a nod to some fun national holidays that make this Monday extra sweet and sporty.
National Gummi Bear Day: A Sweet Celebration
Did you know the gummy bear was invented in Germany in the 1920s by Hans Riegel Sr., founder of Haribo? Inspired by the dancing bears at street festivals, Riegel created the first bear-shaped, fruit-flavored gelatin candy, which quickly became a European-and then global-sensation. Haribo’s “Goldbären” (Gold Bears) hit the U.S. in the 1980s and have been a candy aisle staple ever since.
Where to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth on the OBX:
Candy & Corks (Duck): The original OBX candy and wine shop, featuring nostalgic favorites, bulk Jelly Belly beans, handmade fudge, and seaside classics like saltwater taffy.
Sugar Kingdom (Kill Devil Hills & Nags Head): A department-store-sized candy emporium with gummies, chocolates, bottled sodas, and more-perfect for candy lovers of all ages.
Snowbird Ice Cream (Nags Head): Not just ice cream-grab a “pup cup” for your dog while you indulge in a treat yourself.
National Babe Ruth Day: Baseball on the Banks
Eastern North Carolina has a rich baseball tradition, from youth leagues to collegiate summer teams. This summer, the Outer Banks welcomes the Flying Dutchmen, a new wood-bat collegiate team playing in the Old North State League (ONSL)-the largest league in the region. The Flying Dutchmen’s inaugural season kicks off June 3 at First Flight High School, joining the Tidewater Division alongside teams like the Edenton Steamers and River City Skippers.
About the League:
The ONSL is part of the Player’s League, offering top college athletes a chance to play summer ball with wooden bats, minor league conditions, and a community focus. The OBX has a proud tradition of summer baseball, with previous teams like the Daredevils and Scallywags drawing crowds and building local spirit.
Want to Get Involved?
The Flying Dutchmen are recruiting players, seeking host families, and looking for volunteers. For more info, visit the Old North State League website or email the team’s GM, Tom Hoggard.
National Pet Parents Day: Top 5 Dog-Friendly Hikes on the OBX
The Outer Banks is a paradise for four-legged adventurers! Celebrate your pup with a hike at one of these top spots:
Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve: Over 1,000 acres of sand dunes, ponds, and shaded trails. Leashed dogs are welcome on several trails, including Roanoke and Town Trail.
Jockey’s Ridge State Park: Climb the tallest living sand dune on the East Coast. Dogs on leashes (max 6 feet) can join you for a sandy adventure and sunset views.
Wright Brothers National Memorial: Walk the historic grounds where flight began. Dogs are allowed on leash, and the monument hill offers panoramic views.
Downtown Manteo & Roanoke Island Festival Park: Stroll the boardwalks, explore the waterfront, and enjoy grassy areas for fetch and relaxation.
Currituck Banks Reserve & Boardwalk: A 1.9-mile out-and-back trail through maritime forest and marsh, perfect for a leisurely walk with your pup.
Pro Tips: Always check local leash laws, bring water for your pet, and clean up after them to keep these trails beautiful and welcoming for all.
Enjoy your day on the Outer Banks-whether you’re chasing gummi bears, cheering for baseball, or hiking with your best furry friend, there’s no better place to be this spring!
