Things to Do on the OBX - March 1, 2025
Rise and shine, beach lovers! It's time to shake off those winter blues and embrace the first day of March on our beautiful barrier islands. Whether you're a local or a visitor, there's always something exciting happening in the OBX. So grab your coffee, put on your favorite sweatshirt, and let's dive into today's adventures!
Today's Outer Banks Weather
Today's weather is a perfect mix of spring promise and lingering winter chill. Expect scattered clouds with temperatures ranging from a crisp 44°F to a mild 56°F. The sun will grace us with its presence at 6:32 AM, so early birds can catch a stunning sunrise over the Atlantic.
Water temperatures are hovering around 49°F, which might be a bit chilly for swimming but perfect for beachcombing and shoreline strolls.
March in the Outer Banks
March is a fantastic time to visit the Outer Banks, as the crowds are thinner and the beauty is abundant. The mild temperatures make it ideal for outdoor activities without the scorching heat of summer. You'll find the beaches peaceful and pristine, perfect for long walks and shell collecting.
Plus, March brings a host of exciting events to the OBX. From the Annual St. Patrick's Day Weekend Beer Mile on March 8th to the Kelly's St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 16th, there's no shortage of festive fun.
National Play Outside Day
Today is National Play Outside Day, so it's time to get the kids (and yourself) into the great outdoors! Don't let a little chill stop you – bundle up and head to Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve for a family-friendly adventure. This unique maritime forest offers miles of hiking trails where you can spot local wildlife and enjoy the serene beauty of nature.
For a change of scenery, why not climb the massive dunes at Jockey's Ridge State Park? The kids will love rolling down the sandy slopes, and you'll be treated to breathtaking views of both the ocean and the sound.

Celebrating National Horse Protection Day
In honor of National Horse Protection Day, let's take a moment to appreciate the wild horses that have roamed the Outer Banks for centuries. These majestic creatures, believed to be descendants of Spanish mustangs, have survived on the islands for over 500 years.
Today, efforts to protect these living legends are spearheaded by organizations like the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. These dedicated conservationists work tirelessly to ensure the health and safety of the approximately 100 wild horses that call the northern beaches of Corolla and Carova home.
Wild Horses Beyond the OBX
But the Outer Banks aren't the only place where wild horses roam free. Just north of us, on Assateague Island, you'll find the famous Chincoteague ponies. These hardy equines have adapted to their harsh coastal environment, developing stout bodies and shaggy coats.
Like their Outer Banks cousins, the Chincoteague ponies are believed to be descendants of horses that arrived on the island in the 17th century. Today, they're managed by both the National Park Service and the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, ensuring their continued presence on the island for generations to come.
So, whether you're horsing around on the beach, hiking through maritime forests, or simply soaking in the early spring atmosphere, make the most of your day in the Outer Banks. Remember, every day is an adventure when you're surrounded by such natural beauty!
