Things to Do on the OBX - February 10, 2025
Today on the Outer Banks, expect breezy and cooler conditions. The morning starts with dense fog, so exercise caution if you're driving early. As the day progresses, clouds will give way to some sun, with a high reaching 42°F (6°C) and a low of 36°F (2°C). The ocean water temperature is currently around 46°F (7.9°C), which is quite chilly for swimming.
The Origins of Galentine's Day and Valentine's Day
As we approach mid-February, two celebrations come to mind: Valentine's Day and the newer Galentine's Day. Valentine's Day, observed on February 14, has its roots in ancient Rome and was later associated with romantic love through the writings of poets like Geoffrey Chaucer. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a day dedicated to expressing affection between partners, often marked by the exchange of cards, flowers, and chocolates.
Galentine's Day, on the other hand, is a more recent addition to our calendars. Introduced in 2010 through the television show "Parks and Recreation," this fictional holiday was created by the character Leslie Knope to celebrate female friendships. Observed on February 13, it has since transcended its TV origins, becoming a real-life occasion where women gather to honor their bonds over brunches, outings, and shared activities.
National Umbrella Day: The Unseen Hero of the Outer Banks
It's National Umbrella Day! Isn't it ironic how umbrellas seem to vanish just when we need them most? Here on the Outer Banks, where sudden showers can surprise even the most seasoned locals, the elusive umbrella has become something of a legend.
Picture this: you step outside, the sun is shining, and the sky is clear. Confidently, you leave your umbrella behind. But as fate would have it, halfway through your beach stroll, dark clouds gather, and the heavens open up. You dash for cover, reminiscing about the umbrella you left at home—the one that's probably lounging comfortably in your closet, chuckling at your misfortune.
So, on this National Umbrella Day, let's pay tribute to these fickle friends. May we always remember to carry them, and may they choose to stay by our side when the rain begins to fall.
