OBX Things To Do — Tuesday, March 17, 2026

A little luck, a little salt air, and a lot of St. Patrick’s Day spirit

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the Outer Banks, where the ocean is still wearing its winter coat but the calendar is finally hinting at spring. It’s the kind of day made for pulling on something green, chasing a good meal or a festive drink, and enjoying the kind of local mischief that feels even better with a salty breeze in the background. Spring is almost here, but today still belongs to March, and March on the OBX always knows how to keep things interesting. Spring officially arrives on Friday, March 20.

Today’s Weather

It’s a chilly but fairly decent St. Patrick’s Day across the Outer Banks. Nags Head starts the morning around 39 to 40 degrees, then works its way into the upper 40s by late afternoon, with skies improving from cloudy early to partly sunny and then clearer this evening. Down on Hatteras, conditions are a touch milder, with morning temperatures in the low 40s and afternoon readings reaching the upper 40s to near 50. Overall, it is breezy, cool, and very much a jacket-weather kind of holiday, but better as the day goes on.

There is also a weather-related heads-up for the coast today. The National Weather Service has a Small Craft Advisory in effect for the coastal waters from Duck to Oregon Inlet until noon, with northwest winds around 15 to 25 knots and seas of 4 to 7 feet. Farther south, from Oregon Inlet toward Surf City, the advisory continues until 2:00 p.m., with gusts up to 30 knots and seas up to 9 feet. That is more of a marine concern than a land-based one, but it is a good reminder that the ocean is feeling rowdy today.

Sunrise & Water

Sunrise in Nags Head this morning is 7:13 a.m., with sunset at 7:10 p.m., giving us a nice stretch of daylight to work with as we inch closer to spring.

Water temperatures still have that late-winter bite. The National Weather Service marine report lists area water temperatures this morning at 44 degrees at Duck Pier, 43 at Jennette’s Pier, and 58 at Avon Pier. In other words, the ocean may look inviting in photos, but it is still very much in “admire from shore” territory for most people.

St. Patrick’s Day on the OBX: pubs, taverns, bars, and beachy pours

One of the best things about St. Patrick’s Day on the Outer Banks is that you do not need one giant parade route to have a good time. What you do have is a long ribbon of beach towns filled with bars, taverns, pubs, breweries, and restaurants where you can settle in, order something festive, and enjoy a more laid-back version of the holiday. From Corolla and Duck to Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Manteo, and farther south, the OBX has no shortage of places to raise a glass, grab a bite, and celebrate in your own style.

And even though today belongs to the Irish, we would be doing a disservice to the Outer Banks if we did not mention the bushwacker. It may not be green, and it may not be Irish, but it absolutely deserves a seat at the OBX holiday table. This frozen, creamy beach-bar favorite has become one of the signature drinks people associate with a good time on the coast. So yes, enjoy the pints, the pub food, and the festive specials today, but do not be shocked if a bushwacker still ends up stealing the show.

How many more days until spring?

Just 3 more days.

That means St. Patrick’s Day is basically serving as spring’s opening act this year. We get one last round of March wind, one more excuse for a little nonsense, and then suddenly we are tumbling toward longer evenings, porch weather, and all the cheerful OBX shenanigans that come with the new season. So if your green shirt is hiding under a hoodie today, do not worry. Warmer days are already on the horizon.

A good way to spend the day

Today feels like a good one for a warm lunch, a scenic drive, a stop at a favorite local tavern, and maybe a festive toast before the sun goes down. The beach is brisk, the ocean is bold, and the calendar is finally leaning toward spring. Not a bad way at all to spend St. Patrick’s Day on the Outer Banks.

I can also turn this into a version with newsletter-style section labels like Weather, Today’s Feature, and Countdown to Spring if you want it to match your usual publishing format even more closely.
