As temperatures rise to an average of 65°F, the islands transform into a hub of activity, offering visitors opportunities to participate in endurance races, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with coastal flair, and engage with local arts and history.

Annual St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Beer Mile (March 8)

Hosted by OBX Running Company and Outer Banks Brewing Station, this 4-lap race challenges participants to consume a 12-oz beer per quarter-mile. The 2025 edition introduces a “Green Machine” division for non-alcoholic entrants, reflecting growing health trends.

Running of the Leprechauns 5K/10K (March 15)

This costumed race along Nags Head’s Beach Road features staggered start times for competitive and recreational runners. Post-race festivities at Outer Banks Brewing Station include live Celtic music and a “Best Dressed Leprechaun” contest.
